What is it with our fans? We always look to put a negative stint on EVERYTHING. Moyes stumbled upon a formation, (no he didn't, he played this in his first stint with us) blah blah blah.

Yesterday was the first game since the opener we didn't score, but we actually played well without really creating any clear cut chances, throw in the disallowed Bowen goal as well which could have completely changed the game.

Lighten up you cunts.

Re: ⚽ Chelsea v West Ham - Official Match Thread
Bowen clearly wasn’t happy with the decision, and no other West Ham player was nearby to know if there was contact. Did VAR even look at it? I don’t think the referee was in a position to see so he just gave the Chelsea player the benefit.

For Chelsea’s third, what about the contact on Fabianski which took him out of the game?

Keep dreaming, I can’t see, but did Bowen touch Silvas foot causing him to trip? The odd think is, if I remember well Bowen or any other West Ham player did not complain too much?

Put, like that block and considering we gave both ManU and Chelsea tough games, we’re doing pretty darn well.

Well, we have got over Antonio haven't we?

Best Fulham, Sheff Utd, Leeds, drew with Palace and lost to Man u and Chelsea.

Nothing like being dramatic, BML son.

Good post. Agree with it.

The squad Moyes has is short in quality in depth and we knew at some point injuries and suspensions would hit. We've not really got over losing Antonio but we have managed but then losing Arthur has been another big blow.

But I do also agree with your last part about Moyes. He deserves a lot of credit. He has taken a limited squad and, up until recently, we were in the title race. Not realistically but mathematically. That's a huge achievement.

He has used his resources to give us back an identity on the pitch and introduced a playing style and philosophy that all the players have bought into. The players look fitter, hungrier and more committed that they have for years.

BUT, here's where he lets himself down. He sometimes isn't bold enough. The 3 at the back has been a revelation this season so why change it just cos Arthur gets injured. Push Cresswell upfield to play left wing back and bring Diop into the back 3. Job done.

No, we get one injury and he changes the whole formation back to one that has never served us well.

Fucking daft.

Re: ⚽ Chelsea v West Ham - Official Match Thread
Sir Alf. I agree with everything you said there and having said that my childish point was that thats what Moyes has to deal with now. Getting the best out of a lopsided and disjointed squad with little or no back up in key positions. But thats his job. My point was he lucked into a formation that worked but as soon as said injuries occurred he resorted to type.

As you say mid table squad and i think 6th is completely unatainable if moyes continues with last nights set up. Still i have been wrong so many times before lets hope im wrong on this one too.

The u23 have got a COVID outbreak hence why none of them were on the bench last night

After last night in Jan we need to add a LB, CM and ST otherwise we'll slide into bottom half obscurity again

Re: ⚽ Chelsea v West Ham - Official Match Thread
I suspect or am wildly speculating that Yarmalenko did not play due to a reluctance to injure him. He is one of the few players we have we can get a fee for in January based on his international reputation with the Ukraine and past clubs like Dortmund? Fredericks maybe another we can get a few million for?

GSB are reportedly ( Claret and Hugh Gold's mouthpiece ) not making an money available so Moyes has to find a way to get some dough to prop up a squad that is very thin in depth and quality, We are only competing due to the addition of Bowen, Soucek and Coufal otherwise we would be in bottom 6 IMO.

The problem for us, as evidenced in recent weeks and as we all knew and predicted, boils down to the ownership of GSB and the tattered excuse of a squad they gave to Moyes. Their 10 year reign of incompetent investment in what can best be described an incoherent recruitment policy is now a huge millstone around our neck. We owe a fortune via amortization and ./ or paying via fees on players who are either gone ( e.g. Wilshire) , crocked ( Reid ) , old and on the wane with little if any resale value (Snoddy., Lanzini ) and just not that good ( Anderson and Haller).

Add to that, Sullivan's business interests in the toilet ( office building investments in London now also devalued and rental income reducing by the day ) and we are now unable to compete even with some of the poorer clubs.

Moyes has to repeat exactly what he did under Kenwright at Everton ( small budgets ) albeit Kenwright is a gentlemen and honest and a saint compared to the desperate for adoration, wide boys that own us.

It will take time and much harder in the modern age and success will be mid table to maybe 6th finishes. 6th would be a very impressive achievement. Next few seasons is just about being out of the relegation scraps and doing as we are doing this season so far.

The only game changer is GSB selling and us getting decent, mega rich ownership and that aint guaranteed these days either.

Last night Moyes could of done a couple of things differently like perhaps giving Johnson or someone the Arfur role and playing 5 at the back or giving Snoddy the nod over Noble but would that have made a game changing difference? Possibly ? But the point is he is severely limited in his options. People can point at Moyes Noble, Fornals, Cresswell but IMO its simplistic in the extreme, binary thinking akin to the kindergarden, We have 2 key injuries and our squad is so poor that it has impacted materially. That's the biggest reason why we have slipped in recent weeks against Man United and Chelsea. IMHO of course.

Re: ⚽ Chelsea v West Ham - Official Match Thread
Everyone has been saying give Moyes credit. I said at the beginning of the early run of good form that he had lucked into a mobile front 3 in Bowen, Antonio and Fornals and the injury to Noble forced him into a back 3, which worked well. Injury to Antonio, put lump up front, Noble fit start him. He is a dinosaur.
Why didnt he keep the formation that was working with Bowen, Fornals and Benrahma/Lanzini as the 3, bring Johnson across to left wing back, keeps the shape that was working.

Nope, back to a back fucking four, and Noble walking around getting in the way of Rice and Soucek, everything slows right down so no counter attacking at all. Lump up front, whilst admittedly fucking clueless, has no one close to him so when it does break down we are not in a position to press high as we had been doing.

Rant over, draw at best against Brighton and back to being mid table mediocrity with a mediocre manager, if only he could have seen what he had lucked into and tried to carry on instead of riverting to type. Its the hope that kills you

Re: ⚽ Chelsea v West Ham - Official Match Thread
Confirmed exactly what we have all been saying all along that if none of the kids are ready, which clearly they aren't then we have no cover at left wing back or no one up front who can make the system work if Antonio is injured.
We knew it and last night confirmed it yet again

Re: ⚽ Chelsea v West Ham - Official Match Thread
Sorry Noble has never been an attacking midfielder or box to box midfielder and not really a defensive one either.
Managers have struggled to find his best position but I think he was at his best when he was covering all the ground for the ageing Nolan. Now he has lost that energy, it's very hard to fit him in without very quick and dynamic players around him. He can still pass a ball and has vision but more often than not takes the safe pass these days. He's been an incredible servant for the club but putting him on against one of the best teams in the league on paper is just folly.

I don't want to see his career ending with fans turning on him due to poor managerial decisions.

The first goal was shit to concede. They were all over us. Then I thought we did well but never looked like scoring. I liked our play but was soooooo frustrated with the penetration.

In the end they had better penetration. Better penertrators. Penertrating when it was needed and mattered. That was the difference.

Shame about our defence in the second half against Man U and here against Chelsea. Brings us back to Earth.

Re: ⚽ Chelsea v West Ham - Official Match Thread
My 3 thoughts

1. Noble shouldnt be anywhere near the starting XI. He is clearly 5 yards off the place. 0-2 and 0-3 the only 2 games hes started should say it all. He is a passenger nowadays im afraid.

2. Our squad depth is awful. Masuaku is out and our tried and trusted 5 at the back has fallen apart and we've looked disjointed since (i do admit we played well against Leeds)

3. Cresswell is terrible as a LB

Re: ⚽ Chelsea v West Ham - Official Match Thread
Not sure why Snodgrass and Yarmalenko are frozen out. Both have quality and delivery. I'd argue that Yarmolenko is more mobile and better finisher than Haller. I know Snodgrass is getting on but could he not play left wing back even as a sub? He is combative enough to tackle back and has a great left foot. More likely to be disciplined than Benrahma or Fornals.

Playing Noble in the hole worked fine at Norwich last season, he laid on most of the goals for Antonio.

It’s never gonna work with crash test dummy stinking the place out instead of Antonio.

Re: ⚽ Chelsea v West Ham - Official Match Thread
Playing Noble was the wrong move. Think everyone had same reaction when saw the lineup.

That said playing Noble as the second striker was madness. He got better when dropped deeper but that was because he was tired out and couldn’t keep chasing them then.

Re: ⚽ Chelsea v West Ham - Official Match Thread
I called it that he would take Fornals and our Benrahma on the left.

Benrahma was great in middle versus Leeds.

Need Fornals / Benrahma and Bowen back together for next game.

Genuine question do we have a decent striker in the youth team?

last 2 goals were so shit to concede, we look v slow in a back 4......need to replace Arthur and go back to a 5 we look so much better

Marcos Alonso on loan anyone?

Re: ⚽ Chelsea v West Ham - Official Match Thread
3-0 was a very harsh scoreline, but heres my 2 pennies.....

Moyes set up to not lose the game rather than win

First 20 mins we were massively outplayed, lucky not to be 2-0 down at least......but then from 20-75 mins we were by far the better team. Controlled the game and had plenty of possession. Cant remember us having that much posession at a top 4 side away from home.

The issue was not creating clear cut chances in that 2nd half and that was down to Haller Fornals and Noble. The 3 of them just arent good enough going forward at this level. Especially against a top 4 side. I dont get either how he puts Noble over Soucek in the no 10 role......surely the more mobile and better goalscorer suits to be the no 10 over the aging slow hardly ever scores bloke?

Last season after every game id come on here and moan about Anderson.......well this season its Fornals and Haller. Yet again for the 438th week in a row

- Fornals cant shoot or create chances
- Haller cant trap a bag of cement, outrun my Nan or win a challenge/header/duel against a CB

Lost count the amount of times Haller loses it, or a decent ball up to him doesnt even come close to sticking, or his first touch is shit, or he looks 99% certain to win a battle and gets knocked off it with the tiniest amount of strength. He needs to be replaced in Jan

When we had all the ball 2nd half he needed to get Yarmo and Benrahma on......we had all the ball...get the ball players on. Our crossing from the full backs was poor in quality last ngiht needed the creative players to try and produce some magic around their box

anyway, 3-0 was harsh......have to beat Brighton on sunday now
